Virtually all pathogenic circulating vaccinederived polioviruses (cVDPVs) that have been fully characterized, including those found in sub-Saharan Africa, were recombinants between oral polio vaccine (OPV) strains and co-circulating Human enteroviruses (HEVs) of species C. HEVs are endemic worldwide and among the most common viruses infecting humans. Nevertheless, there is very limited data on the circulation and genetic diversity of HEVs in developing countries, and sub-Saharan countries in particular.
